Fight or Flight

The first time I saw Moira Hahn's work was by a bit of chance. Our friends, who are artists themselves, tempted us to meet them at a West Hollywood gallery to check out an artist whose work they admired. And what admirable work it was, a magical intertwining of pop imagery superimposed onto traditional japanese ukiyo-e (“pictures of the floating world”) prints. Hahn's works are impressive and bold, with a vibrancy only matched by the emotional energy and dramatic moments captured in her paintings. Even though her works are filled with samurai felines, anime characters, and fearful monsters of Japanese mythology, her works somehow coax a suspension of disbelief, such is their overwhelming charm.

This Thursday (March 22) Moira Hahn and the Riverside Art Museum will be exhibiting a special sneak peek show of her new works, titled Fight or Flight. This is a fund raising event for the museum, and includes a tea and luncheon with a $40 donation. If "free" is more within your budget, just wait till April 5th for the official opening reception evening.

And those living afar who can't make the Riverside show can always peruse and purchase giclee prints or poster prints directly from the artist herself. I'm personally tempted to get this beautiful piece, titled Return of the Tengu for myself.
